About VMAG

(Velocity Magnetics)

Introduction

VMAG manufacturers High-Velocity Magnetic Gate Operators designed to enhance physical security and vehicle processing. VMAG operators use electro-magnetic drive units (“Linear Induction Motors”) offering programmable speeds up to 8/fps without moving parts. VMAG’s revolutionary design eliminates gears, chains & pinch wheels and requires no fluids or lubricants. The contactless magnetic drive offers measurable value with immediate benefits, in vehicle throughput and security, combined with reduced maintenance and superior longevity. Each operator is built to order with industry leading quality and premium materials.  Operators may be configured with the V UPS uninterruptable power supply and other options to meet specific requirements. (I.E.:  Marine grade stainless steel finishes, DE-ICE features, ventilation, heated and air-conditioned enclosures, etc.)

VMAG gate operators are not limited by weight or size of gate opening and are compatible with most slide gate applications, from single lane sallyports, to specialized crash gates, to large taxiways. VMAG operators are specified by Airport’s and other commercial, industrial, government and military users for their unique performance and exceptional value.

VMAG Gate Operators are UL-325 certified and listed for Class III & IV applications and are designed specifically for critical infrastructure, airports, seaports, utilities, industrial sites, data centers, corporate facilities, freight distribution centers, government and military facilities or any security sensitive application.  (See Photo Gallery)

History

VMAG, LLC was established in 2009 with a passion for designing and manufacturing innovative products and a commitment to uncompromising quality, integrity, and exceptional customer service that continues to define the VMAG brand. The idea for a different type of gate operator began with the experience and knowledge acquired over 25 years, as a leading manufacturer of conventional gate operators.  This experience, combined with a desire to create a "next generation" operator, with fewer wear related parts and new levels of performance, resulted in the idea for a magnetic gate operator. Proven over time in various industries and applications, “Linear Induction Motor" (LIM) technology was officially adopted as a unique drive system in 2002.  Product development continued to evolve over a 5-year period, followed by 2-years of successful beta testing at a commercial airport. VMAG, LLC was officially formed, and the very first linear induction gate operators were introduced to the market in 2009.

  • The original linear induction motors installed for beta testing, in 2007, remain in service and have an estimated 1,500,000 cycles (and counting).
  • Since their introduction in 2009, no VMAG linear induction motor has ever been replaced under normal use.

LIM Technology

Linear Induction Motor (LIM) technology is used in various industrial applications, for transportation and propulsion, including mag-lev propulsion for high-speed trains and other modes of transportation, amusement park rides, launching systems and many others.  VMAG gate operators incorporate linear induction motors for their superior performance and "solid-state" characteristics without mechanical processes, wear related parts, fluids or lubricants.

A conventional gate operator electric motor utilizes a STATOR (stationary) and a ROTOR (moving) which produces a rotating force that is transferred from the shaft to a sprocket (chain driven), gear or belt pulley.  Hydraulic operators use an electric motor, pump and hoses to force fluid pressure to a hydraulic pinch or cog drive wheel motor.

In a linear induction motor, the rotor is laid out in a flat arrangement while the stator remains stationary. The stator induces a magnetic current directly within the rotor, transferring magnetic energy without the need for additional mechanical or hydraulic processes. VMAG operators utilize this technology, similar to other magnetic propulsion systems, to achieve new and unparalleled performance, with "solid-state" characteristics, that traditional gate operating systems cannot duplicate.

VMAG's linear induction motor assembly (STATOR) installs onto a controller stand or fixed post.  The ROTOR that would normally rotate in a circular motion, is replaced by flat sections of "Reaction Fin".  Connected sections of reaction fin are installed directly on the gate frame.  When energized, the VMAG operator induces an electro-magnetic field that drives the reaction fin and operates the gate using nothing but a direct "contact-less" transfer of energy.  The LIM drive units do not touch the Reaction Fin, and no moving parts, fluids or lubricants are necessary.  Additional sections of reaction fin may be connected to accommodate gate openings of virtually any length.

The VMAG post mounted operator reduces exposure to ground level risks and incorporates a "floating design" that allows the operator to float with the gate's movement.  The operator is self-learning and automatically calibrates at startup and there are no limit switches to adjust. A fail-secure locking mechanism automatically engages in both the open and closed position and is virtually impossible to defeat.  The lock may be manually disengaged in the event of power loss or emergency and an emergency manual release option is also available.
